SUVs are becoming increasingly popular, and they also play an important role at Tesla. This is demonstrated by the efforts to produce the Model Y in Brandenburg and Texas. But which Tesla SUV is the right one for you? Which one is ahead in terms of consumption, functions, suitability for everyday use and price?
In this article, we want to highlight all the important features of the Model Y and Model X to help you make your decision.
Tesla Model X size vs. Tesla Model Y size
Although the Model Y is definitely not a small car, the Model X dominates the topic of size with aplomb. With a length of 5.057 meters and a width of 1.999 meters, it offers significantly more space than its little brother (4.751 x 1.921 meters), which is also reflected in the number of seats: there are up to 7 in the Model X and a maximum of 5 in the Model Y.
Tesla Model X vs. Tesla Model Y: luggage compartment
By their very nature, both SUVs also have plenty of space for luggage. Tesla advertises the Model X as having the "largest storage space of any electric SUV" and provides a maximum of 2.577 liters in prospect - of course only when the rear seat is folded down. In this case, the figure for the Model Y is just under 2.158 liters. Sufficient luggage space can therefore be found in both vehicles.
Tesla Model X equipment vs. Model Y equipment
Just like the Model S, the Tesla Model X interior has been redesigned and now features the controversial Yoke steering wheel as well as multiple entertainment and instrument screens with tremendous processing power and an excellent sound system.
The Model Y, on the other hand, comes with an ordinary steering wheel, a single screen and, at least in the basic version, a less pronounced sound experience.
Both models have all-wheel drive, and you also get the convenience of a Frunk in either case. However, the Model X scores points with its eye-catching and practical "Falcon Wing" gullwing doors. On the other hand, the Model Y has the advantage that it has been sold more often and therefore there tends to be more information and also practical accessories for it.
Tesla Model Y vs. Tesla Model X: Price
If one model is so clearly ahead of the other as in this comparison, it will almost certainly be significantly more expensive. And indeed: around 112.000 US dollars is the minimum price you currently have to pay for a Model X, with a further 3.500 dollars due. The Model Y from 56.990 euros almost seems like a bargain.
Tesla Model X consumption vs. Consumption Tesla Model Y
Another advantage for the Model Y: it consumes significantly less energy. 16.9 kWh/100 km is the official figure, the Tesla Model X consumption per 100 km is more than 33% higher (22.6 kWh). While Tesla is likely to close this gap somewhat with the new version of the SUV, the difference will remain noticeable - especially if you opt for the Model X Plaid with over 1000 hp.
Who is ahead in terms of range?
The Tesla Model Y consumption per 100 km is lower than that of the Model X, but does this also result in a greater range? Not according to official figures. The Model Y has a significantly smaller battery, so that the Model X, with a maximum of 560 kilometers, still goes further than its little brother (maximum 533 kilometers).
In practice, however, this difference is hardly noticeable, especially as the official range figures usually deviate from reality. With a difference of only 27 kilometers, it depends more on the driving style and environmental conditions and how heavy the vehicle is loaded.
Fazit
The Tesla Model X seems to be the object of desire in this comparison, at least until you take a look at the price tag. Twice as expensive as its little brother, the Model Y seems considerably cheaper. Because one thing must not be forgotten: Although the Model Y is inferior in terms of equipment and range, it is still a high-quality premium vehicle.
For the vast majority of people who want to buy a Tesla SUV, the decision will therefore fall on the smaller model. Especially if you don't necessarily need more than five seats and can do without the enormous performance of the Model X. You save significantly on both the purchase and the charging station and still get a rock-solid product.
But if you opt for the Model X, you get the maximum space, technology and performance for your money that Tesla currently has to offer.
