When the charging flap of the Tesla Model Y doesn't work properly, the surprise is often great. Such a simple part - and yet the consequences of an empty battery are great.
Tesla Model Y charging flap: unsuccessful attempts to open
It happens again and again to Model Y drivers that the charging flap either does not open at all or closes again immediately - regardless of whether the command to open it is given via the vehicle display, the app, the Supercharger button or manually.
At least the flap doesn't stay open permanently, which would probably be even more inconvenient. In any case, it is a good idea to protect the charging ports with a charging socket cover .
What is the cause
The cause of the charging flap malfunction is usually a software bug, which sometimes even fixes itself over time.
You can, of course, also support the process. The first approach is to reset the vehicle computer using the steering wheel buttons. Here we have explained how such a Tesla reset works.
If this does not work, it often proves helpful to put the Model Y to sleep. This means: switch off all functions (including guard mode), leave the vehicle, stop using the Tesla app and do not charge it. This puts the Model Y into standby mode, which can fix many software bugs.
It can also help to open all doors as well as the frunk and trunk or to hold the charging flap open manually (if it opens briefly) and plug in a charging cable.
