SUVs are becoming increasingly popular, and they also play a significant role for Tesla. This is evidenced by their efforts to produce the Model Y in Brandenburg and Texas. But which Tesla SUV is right for you? Which one comes out on top in terms of fuel consumption, features, everyday usability, and price?
In this article, we want to highlight all the important features of the Model Y and Model X and thus help you in your decision-making process.
Tesla Model X size vs. Tesla Model Y size
Although the Model Y is definitely not a small car, the Model X dominates the size category. At 5.057 meters long and 1.999 meters wide, it offers significantly more space than its smaller sibling (4.751 x 1.921 meters), which is also reflected in the number of seats: up to 7 in the Model X, compared to a maximum of 5 in the Model Y.
Tesla Model X vs. Tesla Model Y: Luggage compartment
Naturally, both SUVs offer plenty of space for luggage. Tesla advertises the Model X as having the "largest cargo space of any electric SUV," promising a maximum capacity of 2,577 liters. – Of course, this only applies if the rear seats are folded down. In the Model Y, this translates to almost 2,158 liters. So, both vehicles offer ample luggage space.
Tesla Model X Features vs. Model Y Features
Just like the Model S, the Tesla Model X interior has been redesigned and now features the controversial Yoke steering wheel as well as several entertainment and instrument screens with enormous computing power and an excellent sound system.
The Model Y, on the other hand, comes with a conventional steering wheel, a single screen, and, at least in the base version, a less pronounced sound experience.
Both models have all-wheel drive, and the convenience of a frunk is included in every version. However, the Model X scores points with its striking and practical "Falcon Wing" doors. On the other hand, the Model Y has the advantage of having sold more units and therefore tending to have more available. Information and also practical Accesories That's what it's for.
Tesla Model Y vs. Tesla Model X: Price
When one model outperforms another so significantly, as in this comparison, it will almost certainly be considerably more expensive. And indeed: Currently, you have to shell out at least $112,000 for a Model X, with an additional $3,500 for the perhaps decisive seven seats. The Model Y, starting at €56,990, almost seems like a bargain in comparison.
Tesla Model X consumption vs. Tesla Model Y consumption
Another advantage of the Model Y: It consumes significantly less energy. The official figure is 16.9 kWh/100 km, while the Tesla Model X's consumption per 100 km is more than 33% higher (22.6 kWh). While Tesla may close this gap somewhat with the new version of the SUV, the difference will still be noticeable – especially if you opt for the Model X Plaid with over 1000 hp.
Who has the best range?
The Tesla Model Y's fuel consumption per 100 km is lower than that of the Model X, but does this result in a greater range? According to official figures, no. The Model Y has a significantly smaller battery, so the Model X, with a maximum range of 560 kilometers, still goes further than its smaller sibling (maximum 533 kilometers).
In practice, however, this difference is hardly noticeable, especially since official range figures usually deviate from reality. With a difference of only 27 kilometers, it depends much more on driving style, environmental conditions, and how heavily the vehicle is loaded.
Conclusion
The Tesla Model X seems to be the object of desire in this comparison, at least until you look at the price tag. At twice the price of its smaller sibling, the Model Y seems significantly cheaper. Because one thing shouldn't be forgotten: although the Model Y falls short in terms of features and range, it is still a high-quality premium vehicle.
For the vast majority of people looking to buy a Tesla SUV, the smaller model will therefore be the obvious choice. This is especially true if they don't absolutely need more than five seats and can do without the Model X's enormous performance. Both the purchase price and charging costs are significantly lower, and you still get a very solid product.
Those who opt for the Model X, however, get the maximum amount of space, technology and performance that Tesla currently has to offer for their money.
