Build a Tesla Supercharger yourself? How to make the bizarre project a success

With the Supercharger network, Tesla has put itself in an excellent market position. No other manufacturer can offer its customers such a charging network - not to mention the quality, integration and charging speed.

However, Superchargers also have one thing in common with other charging networks: they are very rarely found on your own doorstep. As a rule, you have to drive a few kilometers to the nearest charging station or charge at home - which is even better for the battery, but takes longer.

This raises the bizarre question: Can you build a Supercharger yourself and put it in your driveway?

For an actual Supercharger, the answer is unfortunately "no". Because even if you had the necessary electrician skills to deal with such power, the electricity supplier would probably not be at all enthusiastic and would shut down the system before the power grid in the neighborhood collapsed.

However, there are a few examples of talented Tesla drivers who have given their less powerful home wallbox a Supercharger-style housing, causing astonishment. The builders report on this in the tff forum, among other places. You can also find this type of self-build on eBay from time to time.

One of the users in the forum even provided a kind of construction manual. This shows that he built his "Supercharger" from colored acrylic panels, wood and aluminium tubes. He is also said to have received official authorization from Tesla for private use. With the necessary materials and time, such a project is not necessarily rocket science.
