Tesla Superchargers are an important pillar of the US car manufacturer's success. Not only are they very easy to use, but above all they were available in sufficient numbers early on. This was important because other providers or mobile charging solutions such as the Juice Booster did not yet exist.
Nowadays, almost everyone has to pay for charging at the Supercharger , but that wasn't always the case. We explain what the situation is with free charging.
Supercharger free of charge: only possible with difficulty today
It all started quite simply: to boost sales, every Model S or Model X ordered by 15.01.2017 received a lifetime free charging right.
The exciting thing: The right is not lost if the car is sold privately, but is transferred to the buyer. So if you buy a Tesla Model S or X that was ordered before this date, you can still enjoy free charging today. The only requirement is that the vehicle was no longer owned by Tesla in the meantime, as the company cancels the charging rights in such cases.
Unfortunately, the following applies to all later vehicles and models: Even if free charging quotas or free months were still available for a long time under various conditions, these were only valid for the first owner.
So if you don't currently have free charging rights, you can only get them by buying an old Model S or X - or through special offers.
Such promotions take place on public holidays or during vacations along popular travel routes; early in the morning or late in the evening you can then charge for free at selected stations.
