Tesla now offers five different paint finishes in its configurator, and two new colors are already available in Germany and elsewhere. Many people ask themselves: How sensitive are the different paints? And are there differences between the various production sites?
In this article, we therefore want to address the topic of paint quality at Tesla. The car manufacturer offers various paint techniques. White and red are so-called multi-coat paintwork. Blue and gray are available as metallic paints and black is a solid paint, i.e. the "simplest" form of paint without additives or other special features. As Tesla drivers in the tff forum explain, the paint layer on Teslas is usually quite thin and soft - regardless of the color chosen. However, it is also emphasized that the general quality of the paintwork has improved significantly since the first Model 3s from the USA. Currently, vehicles from the Gigafactory Shanghai - which also generally delivers the highest processing quality - probably achieve the best and most uniform paint finish. However, it has also been shown that the different locations are becoming more similar in terms of quality over time - so with the "most advanced paint system" in Grünheide, this should soon also apply to the paint. The susceptibility of the paint in Tesla is therefore not necessarily dependent on the processing. Rather, it is the color itself that makes the difference. The uni-lacquer black, for example, looks great - but scratches and dirt are quickly visible. But it is also the easiest to repair. Blue tends to be less sensitive due to the restless metallic look, but the light base coat is also a problem here. The colors white and grey therefore require the least maintenance; only insects are more visible on these colors in summer.Tesla paint: quality is equalizing
