It is well known that the quality of workmanship at Tesla depends in part on the production location - and interestingly, the Gigafactory in Shanghai, China, is at the forefront here. But what exactly are the differences between a Model Y from Berlin and one from China?

Tesla Model Y China vs. Tesla Model Y Germany: differences are small these days

The fact is: over time, the different production locations are fortunately converging more and more in terms of quality and equipment. Whereas not so long ago there were clear differences in the chassis, for example, or the Chinese model was fitted with different equipment to the German model, the list of differences today is limited to minor details.

Tesla Model Y Shanghai vs. Tesla Model Y Grünheide: constant change

In addition, production at Tesla is constantly changing - a car produced at the beginning of the month can have completely different features than one produced at the end of the month. The following differences can therefore be identified with some certainty: The Model Y from Grünheide has more felt trim in the trunk and around the rear seat, softer door panels and tie-down points in the trunk. The seats also have double stitching and can therefore be visually distinguished from the Chinese models.

These in turn have thicker glazing and therefore possibly better insulation. In addition, and this is the biggest advantage, Shanghai still delivers a more consistent and reliable level of quality. However, as I said, the differences are small and will probably become even smaller in the future - and what you don't like, such as the controversial parcel shelf, can often be eliminated by practical accessories .
