Tesla cars and the danger of martens: what you need to know

Cars are like many other products: innovation makes some problems disappear, such as unreliable engines, while creating new ones, such as adequate protection against hackers.

And some problems simply persist - such as marten bites. These are an issue almost as old as cars themselves. Angled engine blocks are ideal dwellings for the animals, and cables taste particularly good to them.

The problem: If the marten strikes, an immediate repair is due in any case, because the safety risk is too great. In the combustion engine , this costs a few annoying but bearable hundreds of euros, as the affected cables can simply be repaired or replaced individually.

In electric cars such as a Tesla, on the other hand, the entire cable set usually has to be replaced if one of the installed high-voltage cables is damaged. Cost point: many thousands of euros. It therefore makes sense to take out car insurance that also covers marten damage.

Better than good insurance, however, is damage that doesn't happen in the first place. There are various approaches to protect against martens. The most effective of these are sealing all possible entry points into the vehicle or sheathing the cables with bite-resistant materials.

The installation of electric shock devices has also proven to be effective, but all of this must be carried out by a specialist. Self-executable measures such as laying out marten grids, foreign odor trails or ultrasonic devices are cheaper, but offer lower chances of success.
