How safe are Tesla vehicles?

Teslas are fast, comfortable and clean - but are they safe? According to official safety assessments by the authorities, they are. In their ratings, Tesla generally achieves the maximum score. But why is that? What makes Tesla vehicles so safe and suitable for families

Tesla cars are safe and suitable for families for these reasons

1. Low center of gravity

As with all electric cars, Tesla's heavy battery is built into the floor. This significantly lowers the vehicle's center of gravity compared to combustion engines, as a large part of the vehicle's mass is close to the road. This not only makes the car more agile to drive, but also significantly less prone to tipping over or rolling over. 

To visualize this, just imagine a vertical bar with a weight attached to it. If the weight is attached at the top, the bar will fall over easily if touched. If, on the other hand, the weight is attached at the bottom, the bar remains stationary even under relatively strong impact.

This can now be transferred to a Tesla, which will stay flat on the road even under heavy lateral acceleration.

2. Extra crumple zone

Another advantage of electric cars over combustion engines is the absence of an engine under the hood. Engines are heavy and hardly deformable, so pretty much the opposite of a good crumple zone.

Without the engine, there is more space available for deformable parts and thus as a crumple zone that absorbs the impact energy in the event of an accident.

For this reason, Teslas offer increased safety and more space in the passenger compartment despite their comparatively short snout.

3. Safety and assistance systems

Tesla's safety and assistance systems are another reason for the vehicles' excellent safety ratings. Lane Keeping Assist, Emergency Brake Assist and much more come as standard with Tesla, whereas with some other manufacturers you have to pay extra for them.

In addition, these systems are continuously improved and maintained through software updates. Even vehicles that originally had a poorer version of the systems can be subsequently improved.

4. Tesla safety ratings

As mentioned at the beginning, Tesla regularly receives top ratings for its vehicles. The Model 3 has already set records between 2017 and 2019, receiving five stars in all categories from both the American NHTSA and the European NCAP. It proved to be the best vehicle ever tested.

Since then, safety at Tesla has of course improved even further, especially in the area of assistance systems. And the other models are in no way inferior to the Model 3, they can also convince with 5 stars.

5. Tesla Model 3 suitable for families?

Tesla vehicles such as the Model 3 are therefore highly safe vehicles and are constantly being improved, which is an important aspect for the assessment of family suitability. But Tesla also performs well in other key criteria for families.

The American manufacturer's cars offer above-average space for both luggage and passengers in their respective classes. The infotainment system is also first-class and is well suited to entertaining children.

The package is rounded off by the ISOFIX attachment points fitted as standard on the rear seats, which can be used to securely attach all types of child seats.

Tesla cars can therefore be considered safe and family-friendly vehicles with a clear conscience.
