Since the beginning of 2022, electric car drivers have had the opportunity to earn money with their vehicles; the key term here is... GHG quotaFind out here what it is and how you can benefit.

What is the GHG quota?

The greenhouse gas (GHG) quota is an energy policy instrument introduced in 2015 and part of the emissions trading system. In short, this means there is a fixed (and annually decreasing) budget of emission allowances for climate-damaging gases. Companies that want to emit such gases must purchase the corresponding allowances or trade them among themselves.

For some time now, climate-friendly companies have been selling their surplus emissions allowances to "dirtier" companies, and Tesla has already made a considerable profit from this. Since this year, however, private individuals can also participate in this trade, provided they own a purely electric car (entered as "electric" in field P.3 of the vehicle registration document). Hybrid vehicles, on the other hand, are not eligible.

How much can Tesla drivers receive?

In theory, buyers and sellers can freely negotiate a price for the rights. In practice, however, specialized providers collect the rights from many private individuals for a commission, have them certified by the Federal Environment Agency, and then sell them in large quantities to interested companies. This significantly reduces the effort for both sides.

One of these providers, which offers a particularly simple process and a commission rate significantly below the market average, is Elektrovorteil.deAs a Tesla driver, you can receive up to €400 per year here. All you have to do is upload a copy of your vehicle registration document.

What should you pay attention to?

The vehicle owner always owns the greenhouse gas (GHG) quota, which is verified via the vehicle registration document. Currently, it is not necessary to prove that the vehicle was actually driven or charged – however, this could change in the future. Important: The quota can only be sold once per year and is tied to the vehicle. Therefore, if you have purchased a used car and the previous owner has already sold their GHG quota, you will have to wait until next year before you can claim your quota again.

Even if you own other electric vehicles such as vans, buses, or trucks, you are eligible for GHG quotas. Elektrovorteil will also sell your bonus in this case.
