The New Aero Wheels stem precisely from the dilemma mentioned at the beginning: Tesla itself did not offer enough choice and could not convince all customers with its Aero Wheels. Although they were efficient and enabled long ranges by the standards of the time, they were visually unappealing to many buyers. Customers were missing a wheel that was in keeping with the otherwise futuristic Model S.

Independently of each other, the later founders of The New Aero, three German and Swedish Tesla drivers, pondered the problem. They finally came together in a discussion on the Tesla Owners Community forum and decided that they did not want to accept the current situation. They decided to found their own company and "build the wheel that Tesla never built". The new wheel should be "in harmony with the construction and design of the vehicle" and "improve every aspect [of a wheel]" - from handling to design to efficiency.

In order to achieve this goal and to be able to sell the resulting product in large-scale production, The New Aero teamed up with the Italian family business Fondmetal. Fondmetal is an established wheel manufacturer with decades of experience in the production of light alloy wheels. Among other things, the company was also represented in Formula 1 with its own racing team and thus gained important expertise in aerodynamics.

The New Aero rim: Design

The "Razor" rims developed exclusively for Tesla vehicles, which are the result of this partnership, can rightly be described as extraordinary. In terms of design, The New Aero was inspired by the typical Tesla look, according to the manufacturer. In particular, the rear design with the striking rear lights was incorporated into the look of the rim.

The result is a rim whose D-shaped air outlets are somewhat reminiscent of the over-turbine rim of the Tesla Performance models. However, the outlets on The New Aero rims are significantly smaller, creating a large, continuous surface in the middle of the Razor - a "bowl", as The New Aero puts it. This is intended to reflect the sky and the sun and ensure a "perfect balance between feminine and masculine form".

This design is also made possible by the barely visible integrated wheel nut cover and the matching center cap with the New Aero logo. The latter can also be replaced with the original Tesla cover. The rim is also compatible with the original wheel nuts.

Overall, the New Aero rim is characterized by a luxurious yet sporty high-end look that could previously only be found on vehicles from the Rolls Royce or Mercedes Maybach class. The rim has also impressed various international juries: it has received the Red Dot Award: Product Design and the iF Design Award, among others.

The Razor rim is available in sizes between 19 and 22 inches. There is also a choice of up to three colors with Glossy Titanium, Matte Stealth and Smooth Stealth depending on the size.

The New Aero rims: Efficiency

The look alone is special, but the New Aero Razor rims can do even more: thanks to their special design with a large closed surface and covered wheel nuts, there is less air turbulence on the wheel while driving. In addition, the rims are designed specifically for the left or right side of the vehicle - i.e. they are directional. This guarantees a symmetrical airflow at all times.

These properties significantly reduce air resistance and therefore the vehicle's fuel consumption. Driving noise is also reduced, making the cabin even quieter.

In figures, this means 30% less moving air, 9.9% less drag and 94% less lateral force than the standard Model S. Depending on the vehicle model, this results in between 2 and 7 percent more range.

The New Aero rims for all Tesla models

The idea and concept of the New Aero rims was born with the image of the Model S in mind. The New Aero Model Y wheels

There is currently only one matching Razor wheel for the Model Y. The 19-inch matte stealth version manufactured using the low-pressure die-cast aluminum process fits all variants of the Model Y and is therefore particularly interesting as a replacement for the Gemini rims, which are also 19 inches in size. According to The New Aero, however, there is only a visual difference compared to the Gemini rims, in terms of efficiency both are on a par.

The 19-inch Razor rim has a Europe-wide ECE homologation, for the Model Y Long Range and Performance there is even a German ABE (General Operating Permit) and a NAD, the Italian equivalent.

To the technical data: The 19-inch Razor rim weighs 15 kilograms and has a maximum load capacity of 830 kilograms. It measures 49 x 49 x 22 centimetres or 19 x 9.5 inches and has an offset of +45 millimetres. The New Aero recommends tire sizes between 255/45 R19 and 275/40 R19.

The New Aero Rims Tesla Model 3

More choice allows The New Aero Model 3 drivers: They have the choice between the colors Glossy Titanium and Smooth Stealth. Both are available on the 19-inch Razor rim made of low-pressure die-cast aluminum. The New Aero Model 3 rims have an ABE and NAD, while the non-performance models of the Model 3 also have ECE homologation.

The Razor rim offers a good alternative to the 18-inch Aero rims or the 19-inch sports rims on the Tesla Model 3 and the Model 3 Long Range, as it simply looks better and is on a par with the Aero rims in terms of efficiency.

If you can do without the one inch in diameter, the Razor rims are definitely an alternative to the 20-inch over-turbine rims of the Model 3 Performance. While they are just as eye-catching, The New Aero rims provide up to 7% more range.

To the technical data: The 19-inch Razor rim weighs 14 kilograms and has a maximum load capacity of 710 kilograms. It measures 49 x 49 x 22 centimetres or 19 x 8.5 inches and has an offset of +35-40 millimetres.

The New Aero Rims Model S

The Tesla Model S served as a model and inspiration for the developers of the New Aero Rims. It is therefore hardly surprising that the luxury sedan has the largest selection of Razor rims. There is a choice of forged 21-inch monoblock rims in all three colors - Glossy Titanium, Matte Stealth and Smooth Stealth - as well as 19-inch rims made of cast aluminum in Smooth Stealth.

All variants can be driven without further registrations; the 21-inch Razor have ECE homologation, while the 19-inch version also has an ABE and NAD.

However, this only applies to Model S built up to 2020. For newer models, the rims are also available in both sizes, but only in Matte Stealth (21-inch) and Smooth Stealth (19-inch). In addition, there is no registration valid in Germany yet, but ECE homologation is planned for March 2023 for the smaller 19-inch Razor, and an ABE is also to follow.

To the technical data: The 21-inch Razor rims weigh 15.65 kilograms each and have a maximum load capacity of 750 kilograms. They measure 56 x 56 x 25 centimetres or 21 x 8.5 inches or 21 x 9 inches (depending on the model) and have an offset of +40 millimetres.

The 19-inch rims for the Model S weigh 14 kilograms and can carry a maximum of 750 kilograms. They measure 49 x 49 x 22 centimetres or 19 x 8.5 inches and have an offset of +35 millimetres.

The New Aero rims Model X

The New Aero supplies the largest rims for the Tesla Model X. Here you can get 22-inch forged monoblock rims in Glossy Titanium, Matte Stealth or Smooth Stealth. All variants have ECE homologation and can therefore be driven in Germany without registration. Unlike the Model S, there is no differentiation according to year of manufacture.

You can also give your Model X or Model X Plaid a plus in efficiency with the New Aero rims - and even without the rim diameter being smaller than the original Tesla parts.

To the technical data: The 21-inch Razor rims weigh 17.9 to 18.8 kilograms each and have a maximum load capacity of 900 kilograms. They measure 58 x 58 x 26 centimetres or 22 x 9 inches or 22 x 10 inches (depending on the model) and have an offset of +35 millimetres.

The New Aero wheel: TÜV, tests and certifications

An important aspect of third-party wheels is always the question of registration requirements. After all, in Germany and many other countries, vehicle parts must be thoroughly checked and approved for use. If a rim does not have such approval, individual registration may be necessary, which involves some effort.
