One of the great advantages of a Tesla: Thanks to the huge battery in the vehicle floor, the Tesla Model Y 12V socket, for example, can be active permanently even when the vehicle is stationary. This allows practical gadgets such as a Tesla Model Y refrigerator to be operated. Unfortunately the last software update ended this functionality of the Tesla cigarette lighter - why?
Tesla cigarette lighter: What we know
Whether it's a cold soft drink in summer or for storing chilled shopping: many Tesla drivers already use a small car refrigerator that is operated via the 12 V socket - even when the car is stationary.
The only requirement so far: Guard mode had to be activated, and the cigarette lighters were permanently energized. However, following a number of incidents in China in which loads that were far too large, such as microwaves or kettles, were connected, this is now a thing of the past.
Tesla has the continuous current with the 2024 update.32 and cites safety concerns as the main reason. All Tesla models are affected, including the Model Y, the Tesla Model 3 12V socket and its Model S and X counterparts. Many Tesla drivers were of course completely unprepared. So what to do
Continue to operate the Tesla Model Y 12V socket
The good news: As with many problems, an at least acceptable work-around was quickly found, as the power supply remains activated in camping mode.
The bad news is that this solution is not without its drawbacks. This means that the energy requirement is higher, as the air conditioning system also continues to run. In addition, your Tesla no longer locks itself. Read more about Tesla Camping Mode here.
Connecting the Tesla Model Y socket in the trunk yourself
If you are technically gifted and want to take the risk, you can also tackle the problem yourself. Tesla drivers report that voltage is permanently present under the rear seat at the DC-DC converter and under the center console at the power supply for the rear ventilation when the guard mode is activated.
A cable is quickly laid from these voltage sources to the place of use and the problem is solved. Please note, however, that this solution is carried out at your own risk and may result in warranty problems. We therefore recommend keeping your hands off it in the truest sense of the word.
Tesla Model Y refrigerator: Is there any hope?
Luckily, Tesla can hope that a future update will make the cigarette lighters fully functional again - for example with a selection option where the driver can switch the sockets back to permanently active after recognizing the risks.
As a fridge owner, you can only hope for this; this accessory is too practical. Until then, however, you will have to make do with camping mode. Better than nothing!
