Anyone looking at German roads can no longer ignore Tesla. The e-car pioneer has long since ceased to be a niche manufacturer and is now even outstripping one or two of the big players in terms of registration figures.
But what is the actual number of Teslas in Germany? What influence did the end of state subsidies for electric vehicles have? And what about Tesla registration figures worldwide?
Here you can find all the facts, figures and data on the US car manufacturer.
Teslas in Germany: Current figures
- Number on January 1, 2025: 191,300
- Number on January 1, 2024: 164,300
How many Teslas are there in Germany? According to Statista, there were 191,300 vehicles on the first of January this year - and the trend is rising. In 2024 as a whole, however, only around 59% of the 2023 figure (63,658) was reached with 37,574 newly registered cars.
We are curious to see whether last year's weak phase can be overcome in 2025.
For a more accurate picture of Tesla registration figures in Germany, it is worth taking a look at the monthly registration figures.
Tesla registration figures 2025
Tesla registration figures February 2025
- Tesla registrations January: 1,429
- Comparison with the same month of the previous year: 6,038
There was only a slight upward trend in February, Tesla continues to keep a safe distance from record figures. A glimmer of hope: the new Model Y "Juniper", which is already expected to lead to increasing sales figures abroad.
Tesla registration figures January 2025
- Tesla registrations January: 1,277
- Comparison with the same month of the previous year: 3,152
If January was supposed to bring hope for the new year, it was a resounding failure. Only 1.277 new Teslas on Germany's roads - despite the general upward trend in e-cars - leave room for gallows humor at best; after all, the year 2024 no longer looks so bad. Let's see what approaches Tesla uses to get out of this mess.
Tesla registration figures 2024
Tesla registration figures December 2024
- Tesla registrations December: 3,905
- Comparison with the same month of the previous year: 4,001
Year-end spurt! In December, registration figures shot up again and even almost caught up with the previous year's figure - which, to be fair, was not really good itself. In this respect, we are excited to see what the new year will bring.
Tesla registration figures November 2024
- Tesla registrations November: 2,208
- Comparison with the same month of the previous year: 3.353
November also saw a similar decline compared to its predecessor last year. It is probably time to say goodbye to the record figures from 2023, when there was still an e-car subsidy, in the longer term.
Tesla registration figures October 2024
- Tesla registrations in October: 1,607
- Comparison with the same month of the previous year: 3,347
Unfortunately, the September hope does not seem to be confirmed. Only 1,607 new Teslas in Germany, 52% fewer than in October 2023, is the sober result. It is noteworthy that the total number of new electric cars remained at a high level for 2024 - Tesla does not seem to be able to benefit from this at presentand is now also falling behind BMW in a year-on-year comparison.
Tesla registration figures September 2024
- Tesla registrations September: 3.758
- Comparison with the same month of the previous year: 4,216
Are things picking up again as we approach the end of the year? In September, the number of new Teslas in Germany increased significantly and is only around 10% below the figure for the same month last year - no month in 2024 has ever come so close to the respective reference from 2023.
Tesla registration figures August 2024
- Tesla registrations August: 2,370
- Comparison with the same month of the previous year: 6,903
August is roughly on a par with the previous month, but this is not good news. There were just under 4,500 more vehicles at the same time in 2023; 2024 no longer seems to be a good year for Tesla (in Germany).
Tesla registration figures July 2024
- Tesla registrations July: 2,470
- Comparison with the same month last year: 3.905
We are unfortunately back to the usual trend: 2,470 new Teslas in July are now neither a record nor suspicious. Rather, it's a 36 percent drop compared to a mediocre month last year.
Tesla registration figures June 2024
- Tesla registrations June: 4,648
- Comparison with the same month of the previous year: 8,044
Well, there you go! With 4,648 new registrations, June is the second strongest month of the year so far. A trend reversal? A comparison with the previous year puts a significant damper on the euphoria: just under 73% more were registered in June 2023.
Tesla registration figures May 2024
- Tesla registrations May: 1,896
- Comparison with the same month of the previous year: 5,265
Those who have been following this chronicle for some time will be familiar with the current trend: it's going down. Only 1.896 new Teslas across Germany is the May balance sheet, a year earlier almost three times as many were newly registered.
Tesla registration figures April 2024
- Tesla registrations April: 1,637
- Comparison with the same month of the previous year: 2,420
So slowly one is inclined to use the word "crisis": Only 1,637 vehicles with the distinctive "T" were newly registered in the whole of Germany in April. Although the same month last year also failed to break any records with 2,420 cars - a decline of just under 32% was nevertheless recorded.
Tesla registration figures March 2024
- Tesla registrations March: 3,878
- Comparison with the same month of the previous year: 8,703
February seems to have been just a brief upswing - in March, 3.878 new Teslas again rather weak figures. This cannot be due to seasonality, because in the same month last year there were 8,703 vehicles.
Tesla registration figures February 2024
- Tesla registrations in February: 6,038
- Comparison with the same month of the previous year: 7,711
Is the worst over? Compared to the performance of previous months, February saw a noticeable upturn in registration figures. However, the 6,038 new Teslas in Germany are still well below the 7,711 that were registered at the same time last year.
Tesla registration figures January 2024
- Tesla registrations January: 3,152
- Comparison with the same month of the previous year: 4,241
January 2024 brought no recovery for Tesla: only 3,152 newly registered vehicles in Germany, 26% fewer than in the same month last year. Is the abolition of the e-car subsidy already making itself felt here? Tesla has reacted and is offering an interest rate of 0.99% for financing the Model Y.
Tesla registration figures December 2023
- Tesla registrations December: 4,001
- Comparison with the same month of the previous year: 17,501
In December 2023 4,001 Teslas were newly registered in Germany. The picture of weak performance compared to the same month last year therefore continues, when more than four times as many Teslas were registered (17,501).
Teslas in Germany: registration figures for November 2023
- Tesla registrations in November: 4,923
- Comparison with the same month of the previous year: 10,819
In November 2023, Tesla registered 4,923 new vehicles. This is more than in October, but the figure is more than 50% lower than in the same month last year (10,819).
Teslas in Germany: registration figures for October 2023
- Tesla registrations in October: 3,353
- Vorjahresmonat: 3.185
The Tesla sales figures for Germany as a whole (or rather, the registration figures) were 3,353 vehicles in October, roughly the same level as the same month last year (3,185).
Tesla Model Y sales figures
- 2024 Model Y sold in Europe (until November): 180,600
- 2024 Model Y sold in Germany : 29,900
- Comparison 2023: 45.800 Model Y in Germany
- Comparison 2022: 35,400 Model Y in Germany
Tesla sold over 250,000 of the popular Tesla Model Y across Europe in 2023. No electric car was sold more often - a trend that continued, albeit at a lower level, in 2024 (as of November 2024: 180,600 units).
In Germany alone, there were 29,900 Model Ys in 2024; in line with the overall performance, significantly fewer than in previous years, but still by far the most successful electric model in Germany.
Model Y 2025
Will it stay that way in 2025? The January suggests otherwise. Only 979 new registrations of the Tesla bestseller leave room for an overtaking maneuver by six competitor models from the VW Group. In Europe, 5,900 units were still enough for third place.
The February showed a similar picture with slightly different figures, again with 6 VW vehicles ahead of the Model Y with its 1,035 units. According to Tesla, this is partly due to the switch to Juniper production . The next few months will show whether the Model Y facelift will reverse the trend.
Model Y 2024
In February 2024, Tesla sold 5,408 Model Ys across Germany, which is almost 90 % of all new Teslas in that month. This means that the Model Y is still the most popular electric car in Germany, with only the VW Golf ahead of Musk's crossover SUV in the ranking of all drive types.
However, this trend only continued to a limited extent in March 2024. Although most new Teslas (and e-cars) in this country are still a Model Y with 3,244 units, the car no longer appears in the top ten most registered models of all drive types (15th place).
The general negative trend of April 2024 did not stop at the Model Y: only 1.102 new units in Germany now also mean the loss of pole position for electric cars - 5 models from the German competition are squeezing past.
A very similar picture emerges with 1,169 new Model Ys inMay . This means: 6th place among electric cars, not even in the top 50 among all drive types. It is worth noting, however, that in the current year 2024, the Model Y is still well ahead of the competition with a total of 13,316 units.
The upswing inJune also benefits the Model Y in this country: 3,346 new cars mean a return to the top 50 list of all drive types - where the crossover SUV occupies 21st place. Also worth mentioning at this point is the €6,000 discount that Tesla granted on Model Y stock vehicles in June.
This apparent correlation is immediately dispelled in July: the discount is still available, but the number of Model Y registrations falls to 1,926. This is just enough for 40th place among the most registered cars, but also fits in with the general e-car slump. After all, the company is still in first place for this type of drive.
This did not change in August either. With 1,957 units, the Model Y remains at the July level, but interestingly climbs to 25th place in the top list of all drive types- presumably an effect of the overall weak automotive market .
The strong Tesla performance in September is once again thanks to the Model Y: 3,067 units represent almost 80% of all new Teslas this month and a strong 12th place. Second place in the overall ranking, but onlysecond place among e-cars.
Tesla would probably have been delighted with this second place in October . Led by the Skoda Enyaq, several models from the VW universe can be found ahead of Tesla's bestseller. With a weak 1,276 units, the Model Y lands in 7th place among e-cars, but still clearly leads the annual ranking.
November provides a slight boost with 1,769 Model Ys and a fifth place in the electric car ranking. The Model Y's victory for the year is therefore unlikely to be taken away, despite a slowdown in performance for some time.
A look at December confirms this; 3,239 new Model Ys bring the Tesla bestseller across the finish line as the (e-)year's winner. To retain this title in 2025, however, a significant increase is needed.
Tesla Model 3 sales figures
- 2024 Model 3s sold in Germany : 7,012
- Comparison 2023: 15.900
- New registrations in February 2025: 368
In 2024, the Model 3 is once again clearly inferior to its bigger brother, with a total of just under 7,000 vehicles in Germany - a significant decline of over 55% compared to the previous year, which itself had already lost 50% compared to 2022.
In Europe the Model 3 is much more popular and ranks 2nd behind the Model Y, where it will reach 99,100 registrations in 2024 (until November).
Model 3 2025
In line with Tesla's general performance, the Model 3 is performing poorly in January : 272 new mid-size sedans are a new low for the former bestseller.
In February , things are picking up again, but only to 368 vehicles. Even Mercedes S-Classes were registered more often than the Model 3 this month.
Model 3 2024
In March 2024, there were just 545 units in Germany, which is even fewer than in January, when 695 Model 3s were registered - although overall Tesla sales were lower at the time.
In April 2024, the Model 3 even dropped out of the German top 20 electric cars. It seems that the Model Y is currently the better deal for almost all (German) customers.
Interestingly, the Model 3 was able to fight its way back into the ranking in May ; 710 units mean 12th place and bring the total number of new Model 3s in Germany for the current year to almost 3,000.
The Model 3 was even able to improve its position in the ranking in June and came in 10th place with 1.202 units in 10th place - a brief rebellion, however, which was ended by an almost devastating 450 cars in July and 389 units in August and 24th place among e-cars in each case.
The comparatively strong September comes along with 608 Model 3s and E-car rank 17. However, they are still miles away from previous highs.
Which doesn't mean, however, that they couldn't move even further away: 303 new Model 3s in October are a new low for the time being, which fortunately didn't deteriorate again in November with 416 entry-level Teslas.
In December , things picked up again somewhat; 642 new registrations is the last monthly result of the year.
Tesla market share in Germany currently
- Total market share : 0.7%
- Market share among e-cars: 3.98%
In February 2025, a total of 203,434 new cars of all drive types were registered in Germany, almost 6.4% fewer than in the same month last year. Unfortunately, Tesla's 1,429 vehicles still only account for a share of around 0.7%.
For the entire year 2024 , Tesla has a market share of 1.34% with 37,574 new registrations (approx. 2.8 million new registrations of all brands).
Considering only electric cars, Tesla's share jumps to around 3.98% in February 2025 (approx. 35,949 new registrations of all brands). Even in the weak year 2024, double-digit percentages were regularly recorded here - Tesla is currently no longer really convincing even in the (overall significantly growing) e-car market.
Tesla registration figures worldwide
- New Tesla registrations worldwide (2024): 1,790,000
- Registrations in Q4 2024: 495,600
Tesla plays an even bigger role worldwide than in Germany, depending on the region. 1.3 million vehicles with the distinctive "T" were sold around the globe in 2022, and Tesla is forecasting over 1.8 million vehicles delivered in 2023.
In 2024, there were 1.79 million new Teslas worldwide, so the decline on the international stage is much smaller than in Germany.
A particular highlight here too: The Model Y. Over 2.5 million units ever sold, including 1.2 million in 2024 alone, make the crossover SUV the best-selling electric car worldwide - albeit closely followed by the Model 3 with 2.3 million units.
