The Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y are the American manufacturer's most popular and most affordable cars. Both vehicles seem quite similar at first glance, which is why some people are asking themselves: What is the actual difference between the two electric vehicles (apart from perhaps the year of release)?

Tesla Model Y: Larger and more spacious

The most obvious difference is probably the size. As a crossover SUV, the Model Y is longer, wider and higher than the Model 3 mid-size sedan. This offers more space for luggage and passengers: 971 liters of trunk space is around 50 % more than the 649 liters of the "little brother".

In addition, the Model Y is designed as a seven-seater - even if this configuration is not yet available in Germany.

Model 3 ahead in fuel consumption and range

Larger dimensions usually also mean higher air resistance as well as greater weight and therefore more fuel consumption. The Model Y is no exception here, which is why with 16.9 kWh/100 km it has to give way to the Model 3 (14.4 kWh/100 km) in this area.

This also has an effect on the range: At 602 kilometers, the Model 3 Long Range goes almost 70 kilometers further than the same variant of the Model Y (533 km).

Differences in price and equipment

Naturally, the larger Model Y is also somewhat more expensive, starting at 56.990 €. The Model 3 already starts at 49.990 €. However, the SUV is always available with all-wheel drive, while buyers of the sedan have to make do with rear-wheel drive in the basic version.

The Model Y also comes with larger rims as standard and the option of fitting a trailer coupling.

Both models are equipped almost identically, which is why the range of practical accessories and helpful tips is relatively the same. The individual space requirements and range are therefore likely to be the main factors in the purchase decision.
