If you want to buy a Tesla sedan, you currently have the choice between the entry-level Model 3 or the more expensive Model S. As with any car, it is not only the purchase price that plays a role in the decision, but also other characteristics such as fuel consumption, features and suitability for everyday use.

As a luxury sedan, the Model S is larger and more spacious in all dimensions than the mid-range Model 3. In terms of length, there are more than 30 centimeters between the 4.69-meter-long Model 3 and its 4.97-meter-long big brother. The difference in width is also almost 12 centimeters. As a result, the occupants of the Model S have slightly more space in all directions than in the Model 3, which itself already has a generous amount of space.

But there is not only plenty of space for passengers, but also for luggage. According to Tesla, the Model 3 delivers an impressive 649 liters, and even more in the Model S: 793 liters of luggage space is a house number. Both models have a frunk, i.e. a storage space under the hood.

As with the size, the Model S is also ahead in terms of equipment. The Tesla Model 3 standard equipment includes a single central display, while the (new) Model S also has a driver's display and an entertainment display for the rear seat.
In addition, you get a better sound system and more computing power as standard in the luxury class car. The controversial Yoke steering wheel is also only available in the Model S.

The extra equipment and space naturally comes at a price. In the USA, where the current Model S is already available, the starting price is over 96.000 dollars - roughly the same amount can be expected in euros. A Model 3, on the other hand, is available from 49.990 euros, i.e. for just under half the price.

Another price factor: charging. The lower the Tesla consumption per 100 km, the cheaper the vehicle is to drive. Here, the additional weight and the increased performance of the Model S have a negative impact despite the somewhat more aerodynamic shape: according to official figures, the Model S requires 19 kWh/100 km, around 27.5 % more than the Model 3 with 14.9 kWh/100 km.
These figures refer to the weakest motorized entry-level version, of course the consumption of the Tesla Model 3 Performance is significantly higher. With the Tesla Model S Plaid with over 1000 hp, it is likely to increase even more compared to the basic version.
Tesla Model S real-world range: Better than the Model 3?
Although the Tesla Model S consumption per 100 km is higher than that of its little brother, Tesla gives its flagship with a maximum of 652 kilometers more range than the Model 3 with a maximum of 602 kilometers. The reason for this is the significantly larger battery.
Of course, these official figures are rarely achieved in reality; how far an electric car actually gets depends largely on the driving style and the environment. According to independent tests, the Tesla Model 3 range in practice is around 70-72% of the stated value, and it will probably be similar with the Model S (if you don't use the full power of the Plaid at every traffic light).
Since the luxury sedan "loses" more kilometers in percentage terms than the mid-range car, the two are getting closer in terms of range, at least if you look at the respective maximum ranges. Compared to the entry-level Model 3, which already officially has a range of "only" 491 kilometers, the Model S is of course still clearly ahead.
Fazit
Tesla Model S and Model 3 are like two brothers, except that the big brother goes one step further in almost everything - including the price. You can get two Model 3s for the price of one Model S, and you also save considerably more money at the charging station with the latter.
At the end of the day, everyone who is interested will be delighted with the Model S; it's not Tesla's flagship for nothing. But the Model 3 also offers the potential to fill its owner with joy without putting too much strain on the wallet.
