Some Model Y drivers have reported that their Tesla horn is very quiet – not only inside the car, but also to the outside. This is obviously less than ideal for road safety. But what is the cause?
Tesla horn: The problem
Those experiencing problems with their Tesla Model Y horn don't necessarily notice it immediately. Sometimes the pump is only too quiet in certain situations, sometimes the deficiency only becomes apparent when compared to other cars – but then it's often impossible to ignore, or rather, it's difficult to hear.
By the way: If the horn is already too quiet, you can amplify the noise for your surroundings with the Teslab's Alcantara steering wheel At least it looks luxurious!
Tesla Horn Sound: Possible Causes
Anyone dissatisfied with the power of their horn should first venture into the depths of the settings menu. If "Joe Mode" is activated there, the volume of numerous sounds, including possibly the horn, is drastically reduced. Read more about it here. Tesla Joe Mode!
Another possible cause lies in the installed hardware. In the 2022 production year, Tesla switched from a "normal" horn to a speaker that only simulates the sound of a horn.
Some Tesla drivers are also reporting that this technology is susceptible to moisture. In other words, if the speaker gets wet from heavy rain, the horn is noticeably quieter than when dry. Should this suspicion be confirmed, it would be extremely embarrassing for Tesla and could lead to a recall.
