Tesla is known for innovative technologies in electromobility. The Tesla heat pump is a perfect example of this.
How the heat pump optimizes your driving experience, what advantages it offers and what makes it a technical masterpiece can be found out in this article.
What is a heat pump anyway?
A heat pump is a device that transports heat from one place to another. The heat pump works in a similar way to a refrigerator, but instead of generating cold, it generates heat.
Tesla heat pump: why it is a masterpiece
The Tesla heat pump is an engineering masterpiece thanks to its innovative design. It works with a minimal number of components for ease of manufacture and low cost. For example, the "Super Manifold", a component invented by Tesla, replaces 20 individual parts.
An important feature of the Tesla heat pump is system integration. It is easy to create an isolated design. Making it functional in a complementary system is the challenge. Tesla's model is focused on optimizing function, reducing unnecessary components and saving manufacturing costs.
How does the Tesla heat pump work?
The Tesla heat pump uses heat energy from the environment to increase the interior temperature of the car. This is achieved through the use of special components and technologies that efficiently collect and transfer the heat energy.
An extraordinary feature is the " Tesla-Octovalve". The component was specially developed by the US car manufacturer. It combines the functions that are normally provided by two separate valves.
The Octovalve has eight inputs and outputs. These allow airflow to be directed to different areas of the vehicle, such as the passenger compartment, engine exhaust and engine cooling.
The component is controlled via an electronic control module that regulates the opening and closing of the valves.
Thanks to adaptation to various conditions such as vehicle status and ambient temperature, the Octovalve can be used strategically to generate heat in the interior ,utilize waste heat from the engine ,use excess heat from the battery after fast charging and even store excess heat in the battery when the car is no longer in use.
The Tesla heat pump generally heats not only the interior of the car, but also the battery and other vehicle components. This leads to greater efficiency of the entire system and a longer range.
How much more range thanks to the heat pump?
The heat pump offers an efficient way to reduce energy consumption in the Tesla. The specific benefit varies depending on the situation and vehicle, but savings of 5-15 percent can be expected on average.
This benefit increases the slower you drive, especially on longer distances such as cross-country journeys. Fast driving, on the other hand, can greatly reduce the effect of the heat pump. The greatest benefit is seen on longer journeys, as short journeys often require so much additional heating that the heat pump has no significant effect.
Important: The heat pump is only effective at temperatures above -10 degrees Celsius. If it is even colder outside, an additional electric heater is activated to warm the interior.
Tesla models with heat pump
The Model Y was the first model to be equipped with a heat pump as standard. The basic version of the Model 3 has had a heat pump since the first quarter of 2021. The Model 3 Long Range has even had the component since the fourth quarter of 2020.
The flagship Model S and X cars will have heat pumps installed in the refresh versions from 2021.
So all new Tesla vehicles - Model S, 3, X, Y - now have a heat pump.
Vorteile der Tesla-Wärmepumpe
A heat pump in the car can improve the performance of the battery system and increase the range of the vehicle. It can also help to heat up the interior temperature of the car more quickly, which is particularly useful in winter.
- Improving the performance of the battery system
- Increasing the range of the vehicle
- Optimizing the performance of the car
- Extending the service life of the battery
- Faster heating of the interior temperature
- reduced number of components
- optimized production and costs
Tesla Model 3 heat pump retrofit - is it possible
Although it is theoretically possible to retrofit a heat pump in the Tesla Model 3, this is not common practice. The automaker has only introduced the heat pump in newer models and it is not included as standard in older Model 3 versions.
So a plug-and-play solution for retrofitting the heat pump will be hard to find. There may be companies that specialize in retrofitting heat pumps in older Tesla Model 3s, but it must be questioned whether the costs and benefits are in proportion here.
A retrofit is most likely costly and time-consuming. Furthermore, it cannot be guaranteed that the same performance and efficiency can be achieved as with the newer models.
Our summary of the Tesla heat pump
Overall, the heat pump from the electric pioneer is an innovative vehicle component that achieves low costs and high efficiency thanks to its unique design. The Super Manifold and the Octovalve stand out in particular.
However, the heat pump can only develop its maximum potential if the driving style is adapted accordingly. Then energy can be saved to a noticeable extent and range saved.
