Some Tesla Model Y drivers report unusual noises in the front axle area - in particular a "popping" or "knocking" when driving slowly.
The phenomenon occurs primarily when steering, accelerating or braking and can have various causes
Noise in the front of the car: what is behind it
The described "banging" or "knocking" often occurs on the driver's side of the front end, especially when driving slowly and steering, braking or accelerating at the same time. Some drivers report that the noise occurs irregularly and gives the impression that loose parts are touching.
A possible trigger could be the wiper water tank, which is located on the driver's side close to the fender and the bulkhead.
If the reservoir is not completely full, sloshing water can hit the inner walls and cause the noise described. In some cases, topping up with around 0.8 liters of windscreen washer fluid has completely eliminated the noise.
Other possible causes and solutions
If the noise continues to occur despite the wiper fluid reservoir being completely full, other factors could play a role:
-
Frunk trim: Check whether the frunk trim is firmly attached. Loose parts can rattle when moved.
-
Tires and wheel bolts: Make sure that all wheel bolts are correctly tightened and that the tires are not out of balance.
-
Suspension strut or strut bearing: Some drivers suspect that the noise could be caused by a dry or defective suspension strut or strut bearing. In such cases, an inspection by the Tesla Service Center is advisable.
-
Tire selection: The choice of tires can also have an influence on noise development. Some drivers report that certain tire models can give a "woody" driving experience and amplify noise. Switching to other tire brands or models could help here.
