Tesla doors unlock electrically at the touch of a button – an innovation that is gradually being adopted by many competitors. But what happens if the power supply to the mechanism fails?
Manually opening Tesla doors
Imagine a situation you hopefully never have to experience: a serious accident, you want to get out of the vehicle as quickly as possible – but the connection to the 12V battery has been severed by the impact. An unlikely, but still possible scenario. How would you get out of your Tesla now?
Simple emergency mechanism on the front doors
If you're sitting in the front seats, the solution is quite simple. All Tesla models have a lever in front of the window switches that you can pull upwards to manually unlock the door.
Differences in the rear doors
Unfortunately, it's not so simple with the rear doors. Depending on the model and sometimes even the year of manufacture, there are differences. In the Model 3 and Model Y, there's a more or less obvious insert at the bottom of the door pockets that needs to be removed before pulling a cord.
In the Model S, this cord can be found under the rear seats (you need to push the carpet edge aside slightly), while in the Model X, the saving wire can be found by removing the speaker cover in the door.
Rear doors difficult to open in an emergency
These mechanisms are clearly difficult to operate in an emergency. Tesla seems to have recognized this; at least the emergency release cords are more easily accessible in newer models than before.
However, for models 3 and Y in particular, there is also an accessory that allows for one-handed unlocking. This accessory is controversial, though, as it could tempt small children to open the doors while the vehicle is in motion.
