Tesla doors unlock electrically at the touch of a button - an innovation that is gradually being adopted by many competitors. But what happens if the power supply for the mechanism fails?
Opening Tesla doors manually
Imagine a situation that you hope you never have to experience: A serious accident, you want to leave the vehicle as quickly as possible - but the connection to the 12 V battery has been cut by the impact. An unlikely, but nevertheless possible scenario. How do you get out of your Tesla now?
Simple emergency mechanism on the front doors
If you are sitting in the front seats, the solution is quite simple. All Tesla models have a kind of lever in front of the window regulators that you can pull up to unlock the door manually.
Differences in the rear doors
Unfortunately, it's not so easy with the rear doors. There are differences depending on the model and sometimes also on the year of manufacture. In the Model 3 and Model Y, there is a - more or less obvious - insert at the bottom of the door compartments that needs to be removed in order to pull a cord.
On the Model S, this cord can be found under the rear seats (push the edge of the carpet aside a little), on the Model X you can find the wire by removing the speaker cover in the door.
Hard to open rear doors in an emergency
These mechanisms are obviously difficult to operate in an emergency. Tesla has probably also recognized this; at least the emergency cords in newer models are easier to reach than before.
However, accessories are also available for models 3 and Y in particular, which enable unlocking with a single hand movement. However, this accessory is controversial, as it could tempt small children in particular to open the doors while driving.
However, you can find completely undisputed Tesla accessories in the Teslabs shop - take a look around.
