The best Tesla processing: Giga Shanghai, Grünheide or Fremont Factory?

Tesla's build quality has improved greatly since the early days. Which of the factories are producing the highest quality cars today?

For a long time, Tesla was way ahead of the established car manufacturers in pretty much all areas: Innovation, courage and success in software and range were unbeatable. Only one point of criticism marred the seemingly perfect image of the electric pioneer: the inadequate build quality.

Tesla's beginnings with processing

This was already an issue when the Model S was launched in 2012, but Tesla still had problems getting mass production up and running back then. However, the first batches of the Model 3 from the main plant in Fremont, USA, which were produced under time pressure, also regularly received poor ratings. The uneven gap dimensions, sloppy paintwork and less robust plastic in the interior were particularly frequently criticized.

The early days at Tesla are now definitely over, and production no longer takes place only in the USA, but also in China and Germany. This raises the question for many: What has changed at Tesla in terms of quality? And are there differences between the production sites?

Tesla processing quality today

Although the issue is of course heavily dependent on individual cases, both users and experts agree that quality at Tesla has improved significantly since 2018. Vehicles from the Gigafactory Shanghai in particular, where production has been underway since January 2020, are significantly better finished than their American predecessors and can generally keep up with other premium brands.

This is probably also due to the fact that professional production was built up from scratch in China with brand new machines and optimized processes, while the main plant in Fremont was more a case of "learning by doing".

The Gigafactory Grünheide is also brand new and designed from the ground up, with high hopes for quality. However, it does not yet seem to be possible to fully meet these requirements: Users have already reported uneven gaps, non-flush rear lights and scratched paintwork on their Model Ys from Brandenburg.

Elon Musk is also aware of the problem. He explained that the shortcomings were due to the fact that production was only just being ramped up and that the quality would be better in a few months' time. If workmanship is important to you, you should always order before the start of production and get hold of one of the particularly carefully built opening vehicles or wait until production is running smoothly.

However, the fact is that Tesla's best manufacturing quality currently comes from China, where the Shanghai Gigafactory is running like clockwork. Whether the Germans will reach the same level in the foreseeable future remains to be seen, but it is to be expected. The further Tesla moves up into the circle of established car manufacturers, the better the cars will be in the future.
