Unusual noises in the car can quickly make you nervous, especially if they come from inside the car and are difficult to locate.
During the colder months, Tesla drivers frequently report hearing a rattling or clattering noise when the heating is switched off or the fan is running at low speed. This article explains the cause and what you can do about it.
The problem: Fan rattle in the Tesla after switching off
At low fan speeds, after switching off your Model 3/Y, or when the heating system starts up, rattling or clattering noises may occur. These sometimes persist for minutes, even after the vehicle has been stationary. This phenomenon is particularly common in cold, wet weather.
The causes? Opinions differ. Some suspect ice buildup in the ventilation system, others point to foreign objects like leaves or dirt in the fan wheel. In several cases, contaminants such as maple seeds or road grime accumulate over time and may eventually enter the blower.
Identify the causes and take action
To fix the problem, first look for typical signs: Is the noise dependent on the engine speed? Does it only occur in cold weather? Does it stop after switching on the blower or does it get louder? Answers to these questions will help narrow down the problem.
A first step: Check the cabin air filters. If they are dirty or damp, replace them. Especially after autumn or spring, seeds or small leaves can get caught in them, which can later get into the fan and cause noise.
A high-quality activated carbon filter – e.g., the Tesla Model 3/Y cabin air filter with activated carbon from Teslabs – effectively binds fine dust, allergens and odors, helping to keep the blower permanently clean.
Tip: Additionally, a cabin filter network This net traps seeds, leaves and coarse particles before they reach the cabin air filter – thus reducing the risk of foreign objects getting into the blower wheel and causing disturbing noises.
When should I take my Tesla in for service?
If that doesn't help, remove the frunk tray – with a little technical skill – and take a look at the blower housing. In some cases, you'll find leaves or other obstructions there; carefully remove them. A flashlight and some patience will be extremely helpful here.
If the problem persists or you don't want to attempt it yourself, make an appointment at Tesla Service CenterThere, the fan is inspected and replaced if necessary. Depending on the extent of the repair, the cost ranges from approximately 150 to 700 euros – unless the warranty applies.
