Tesla touch-up pen for small scratches and imperfections
If you're thinking about buying additional equipment for your Tesla, you might be thinking about floor mats or a seat protector, but not a touch-up pen. A touch-up pen can be extremely practical from time to time - just think of the numerous annoying scratches and stone chips that unfortunately happen all too quickly.
When used correctly, a touch-up pen can quickly and reliably replace an expensive and time-consuming repair. For this reason, we would like to give you an overview of the topic.
Why do you need a touch-up pen?
Even the most careful Tesla owner will not be spared minor scratches or stone chips and, as a result, rust spots in the course of the vehicle's life. Damage of this kind is annoying, but does not usually justify a visit to the workshop or similarly expensive treatment.
So it would be ideal if you could simply make these blemishes disappear again yourself - and this is where the touch-up pen comes into play. It is designed to repair minor damage to the paintwork; to literally paint over it.
Ideally, the treated area will look almost as good as new afterwards. And without having to visit a workshop for an expensive and time-consuming repainting.
What should you not use a touch-up pen for?
However, a touch-up pen is not a miracle cure either: it cannot be used to paint over major damage caused by accidents or collisions, for which a visit to the workshop and repainting are absolutely necessary.
On the other hand, very small, barely visible scratches are also not the specialty of a touch-up pen, here you are better off using a polishing cloth.
Tesla touch-up pen for small scratches
Touch-up pencils are available for various applications. The most popular form is certainly the one intended for repairing small scratches and stone chips in the bodywork. Here, one (or more) new layer(s) of paint is simply applied to the affected area, ideally making the damage invisible.
However, the damage is not only no longer visible, it is actually repaired: Correctly applied, the protection provided by the paint layer is completely restored after a touch-up pen treatment.
Where to apply touch-up pen: plastic or sheet metal?
Like paint, touch-up pencils are primarily intended for use on sheet metal or plastic. Metal designed. Although they can also be used on plastic, they are little more than simple paint - which is not necessarily a bad thing. Even a scratch in the plastic can be quickly removed with a little skill.
How long does the varnish take to dry?
Once applied, it takes about an hour for the varnish to dry. If you also want to use clear varnish - and that never hurts - you should be prepared for drying times of up to 12 hours. It goes without saying that the vehicle should not be driven during this time, but should be parked in a dry, preferably covered area.
How long does the paint last?
When applied correctly, a touch-up pen treatment makes the affected area look like new again - and it essentially is. The new paint lasts just as long as the rest of the paint on the vehicle. And a Tesla paint from Teslabs protects the bodywork just as well thanks to the integrated corrosion and UV protection - especially if it is supplemented with a layer of clear coat.
Tesla touch-up pen in white, gray or black: Where can I find the color number?
Regardless of whether your Tesla is painted in "Pearl White" or "Midnight Silver Metallic", the touch-up pen must match the color exactly. When choosing the right product, it therefore helps to know the exact color number of your Tesla. You will find this at the bottom left of the badge in the door frame on the driver's side under the abbreviation "PNT:".
The color code is the same for all models. So whether you have a Tesla Model 3 in Pearl White or a Model S in this color - the color number (in this case PMNG) is always constant.
At Teslabs, we offer the touch-up pen for the body in all original Tesla colors.
How do you apply a touch-up pen correctly?
If a scratch has made its way into the bodywork, it is ill-advised to simply start painting with a touch-up pen. There are a few things to bear in mind.
First of all, any rust should be removed; a pointed object such as a screwdriver is suitable for stubborn rust, but sandpaper or a cloth is usually sufficient. To avoid causing even more damage, the utmost care must of course always be taken.
If you want to be on the safe side, spray the scratch with a rust converter to prevent it from spreading.
Once the rust has been removed, alcohol comes into play - not as a drink for the hard-working painter, of course, but in the form of spirit. Use this and a fine cloth to remove dust and grease from the affected area and then dry, otherwise the paint will not adhere later. In addition to spirits, the following are suitable B. also silicone degreaser to clean the treatment surface.
Once all the preparations have been made, the touch-up pen is finally used. Attention: Shake well before use, preferably for several minutes. It is then advisable to paint a small piece of metal as a "test" and make a color match. If everything fits, the scratch in the vehicle is finely dabbed out with a brush (do not paint, otherwise streaks will appear!).
It is better to use too little varnish and apply several coats if necessary than to use too much - nothing looks worse than a layer of varnish that is far too thick.
Tip: If the bare metal is already visible in the scratch, you should definitely apply several coats of paint to ensure optimum protection.
However, make sure you allow the paint to flash off briefly between coats. After the last coat, you should allow just under 60 minutes for complete drying.
Once everything is dry, you can put the finishing touches to the treated area with very fine sandpaper and then a polishing cloth.
If you wish, you can now apply a coat of clear varnish. This is not absolutely necessary, but increases protection. Important: Allow the clear coat to dry for at least 12 hours.
In addition to the correct application of the touch-up pen itself, the working and weather conditions are also important: make sure you do not work in direct sunlight or in the rain - 20-25 degrees and calm conditions are ideal.
Good lighting conditions are also crucial: if you apply paint at dusk, you may later notice that the treated area looks completely different in the light than the rest of the vehicle.
