Plastic pollution in the world's oceans is one of the greatest modern environmental problems facing humanity. On the one hand, the contamination of the oceans with plastic threatens a gigantic ecosystem consisting of countless animals and plants.
Furthermore, it also poses a danger to humanity, as microplastics are steadily accumulating in water supplies and fish. If these are consumed by humans, it can lead to serious long-term health problems and illnesses.
The Ocean Cleanup The project aims to rid the world's oceans of plastic. Founded in 2013 by the Dutchman Boyan Slat, it uses a complex, enormous, U-shaped system to collect plastic from depths of up to 3 meters below the water's surface.
The project not only targets the oceans where plastic is already present, but also aims to prevent its accumulation in the seas. This is achieved with so-called interceptor systems, which are deployed in heavily polluted rivers and collect the plastic before it reaches the oceans. According to The Ocean Cleanup, 1,000 rivers (approximately 1 million) are responsible for the pollution of the oceans. percent) around 80 Percent of plastic pollution. Within 5 years, Slat and his team want to equip all these rivers with interceptor systems.
The plastic collected through river and ocean cleanups is processed by The Ocean Cleanup into everyday products, which are sold as part of the project and whose proceeds are used to finance the work.
It's also worth mentioning that The Ocean Cleanup helped create the first universally accepted standard that discloses how much collected ocean plastic a product actually contains. This allows consumers to transparently track how the plastic is collected, recycled, and processed.
PLANT-MY-TREE
Global warming is already having noticeable negative effects on the Earth – polar ice caps are melting, and extreme weather events are becoming increasingly frequent. Greenhouse gases emitted by humanity are one of the main causes of climate change. In particular, CO2, which is emitted through the heavy use of fossil fuels such as lignite and oil, is a major driver.
Reforestation in the form of trees is one of the most helpful methods in combating climate change. Trees have the ability to bind and store CO2, thus keeping it out of the atmosphere. The greenhouse effect can therefore be reduced.
PLANT-MY-TREE is a German organization dedicated to sustainable reforestation. The TÜV-certified project plants trees exclusively in Germany, creating accessible forests and thus ensuring regional and transparent planting.
Since the project operates in Germany, numerous jobs are being created here. PLANT-MY-TREE is committed to afforestation, the conversion and protection of forests, and forest regeneration. In this way, comprehensive climate protection can be achieved through reforestation.
