The voice assistant has been available since mid-February. “Grok“ The feature has been activated for Tesla vehicles in German-speaking countries. Previously, customers in the US market had already benefited from the artificial intelligence.
But what exactly is Grok, what are its features, and how do you set it up? This article will address these questions.
What is Grok?
Grok is a generative artificial intelligence, meaning an AI that generates a response to an input. – Perhaps the best-known example of this type of AI is ChatGPT. Grok was developed by xAI, also a Musk startup. The AI was first made available to the microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter).
Grok has now arrived in the Tesla universe and responds to spoken requests there.
What can Grok do in the Tesla?
These requests can be formulated in the same way as if you were asking your passenger something. – No special commands are needed. “What's the weather like in Berlin?“ “My children are bored, tell them a story.“ or “How does an electric motor work?“ These are just a small selection of the millions of possible inputs for Grok.
Because of this ability to conduct a normal conversation with AI on any conceivable topic, Tesla also refers to it as a “AI companion“, i.e., an AI companion.
Furthermore, Grok also acts as Navigation Manager. Commands such as “Take me to the nearest Supercharger“ or “Find a good restaurant nearby.“ Automatically activate navigation to the respective destination.
It's worth noting that Grok, even in its early stages, is capable of planning complex routes in the Tesla. For example, finding waypoints and correctly incorporating them into the navigation is no problem for the AI. You could say to Grok: "Navigate me to the nearest cinema and then plan a visit to a nearby Italian restaurant."
The AI assistant selects suitable destinations and they appear on the navigation display in no time. You don't have to type anything in yourself.

What can't Grok do?
The only requests Grok cannot currently process are vehicle functions such as activating the windshield wipers or seat heating, opening the glove compartment, and much more. However, these functions remain accessible through the familiar Tesla voice commands.
The reason for this is that these are potentially safety-relevant functions that Tesla does not (yet) want to entrust to an AI. However, it is very likely that Grok's functionality will be expanded in the future via a software update and the two voice systems will be merged.
How is Grok set up?
Grok will be automatically installed in the infotainment system with update 2026.2.6 (or newer). – However, this is currently only available in vehicles with AMD processors. Which processor is installed can be found at [link/reference to specific information]. “Steering" > "Software" > "Additional vehicle information" is visible.
If the necessary conditions are met, the Grok app will appear in the infotainment system.To get started, simply open the app; registration or an account is currently not required. Alternatively, you can press and hold the voice command button on the steering wheel to ask Grok something.
The following is important: Since Grok requires an internet connection, the assistant only works with premium connectivity or an existing Wi-Fi connection.
You have a choice between different Grok personalities, such as “Ara”, who is described by the system as a “cheerful woman”:
Furthermore, you can specialized assistants use resources that can help you in a very specific area. For example, there is the Language teachers, therapists or Storyteller:
Grok in your Tesla offers significant added value in everyday life. Currently, its most frequent use for many is assistance with navigation and researching destinations, restaurants, and charging stations.
But other functions such as the language teacher or storyteller can also be a fun gimmick, whether just to pass the time at the charging station or as an activity for the children on the way to the family holiday.
